A New York Times White House Correspondent, Annie Karni, was interviewed by Jim Acosta on CNN Saturday, where she was asked to discuss the backlash to the Obama birthday bash on Martha’s Vinyard. She made a point that many local residents of Martha’s Vinyard dismissed any ‘danger’ presented by the party because it was a “sophisticated, vaccinated crowd.” You can see the comments for yourself in the 22-second video clip below.
Glen Greenwald was one of the first public figures to call her out on the comments. He pointed out that CNN dismissed Obama’s huge, maskless birthday bash as acceptable while in the same breathe condemning the right for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally about to take place in South Dakota.
High profile attorney Harmeet K. Dhillon threw a jab at Karni as well on Twitter:
When pressed about the comment, Karni responded via Twitter, claiming that the clip was taken out of context and the “sophisticated crowd” comment was a direct quote from some residents of the island.
Apparently, Karni still doesn’t get it. Whether they were her words or if they were the words of “many” Martha’s Vineyard residents is irrelevant. The fact remains that many on the left will excuse an event like this if it’s politically expedient, which demonstrates that they aren’t really concerned about getting sick from COVID; rather, the pomp and ceremony of COVID protocols are more of a symbolic gesture than a bonafide safety measure. The sentiment conveyed in those comments is that everyone at the party is clearly ‘one of us,’ so we can excuse them from going through the formalities of demonstrating their allegiance to the cause.
This is yet another example of what we already know; COVID virtue-signaling is more about demonstrating allegiance to a political cause than it is about “science” or “public safety.” If the people in attendance at former President Obama’s party really believed that they were in danger, they would not have been there, or, at the very least, would have maintained social distance and wore masks – which we can tell from numerous leaked photos of the party, absolutely did not happen.
