Harvard Panel: Not All Who Give Birth Are Women, Adopts Term ‘Birthing People’

Instead of using the traditional term, “women,” to describe which half of the population has the ability to get pregnant and give birth, woke elitists at Harvard decided to use a far less common term: “birthing people.”

While promulgating a panel on “maternal justice,” in November, the Harvard Med Postgraduate and Continuing Education Twitter account alleged that “ethnic minority pregnant and birthing people suffer worse outcomes and experiences during and after pregnancy and childbirth.”

Globally, ethnic minority pregnant and birthing people suffer worse outcomes and experiences during and after pregnancy and childbirth. These inequities have been further highlighted by #COVID19. Watch this panel discussion on #MaternalJustice. https://t.co/RcflQQapQo pic.twitter.com/N5m2s2SRdi

The panel purports that “inequities” have been “further highlighted” by the Chinese Coronavirus.

The tweet, almost immediately, attracted criticism for using the term “birthing people,” instead of simply using the word “women.” One Twitter user pointed out the unnecessary and nonsensical term, tweeting: “‘Birthing people’ are women. Pregnant women. Mothers.”

Despite the backlash, the Harvard Med Postgraduate and Continuing Education Twitter account doubled down and explained why such wording was used in their initial tweet:

“The webinar panelists used the term ‘birthing person’ to include those who identify as non-binary or transgender because not all who give birth identify as ‘women’ or ‘girls.’ We understand the reactions to this terminology and in no way meant for it to erase or dehumanize women.”

Recent coverage by Breitbart and Campus Reform have thrust this tweet back into the spotlight.

Furthermore, the panel on “Maternal Justice Across the Atlantic: Race, Pregnancy and Birth Equity in the United States and Great Britain,” which is hosted on Harvard’s website, also uses the phrase “birthing people.”

Verified Twitter user, Mindy Robinson, identified a significant flaw in Harvard’s use of the term “birthing people”: what are women that have never been pregnant to be called?

“I’m a ‘birthing person’ even though I’ve never been pregnant?” Robinson rhetorically tweeted.

I’m a “birthing person” even though I’ve never been pregnant?

Look, I’m a woman. I’m not confused about it, it doesn’t change on some magical whim, and I’m not so obnoxious that I need to make up pronouns for myself to feel “special” or victimized.

Harvard needs defunding NOW. https://t.co/oPU2CgY5C6

“Look,” Robinson continued, “I’m a woman. I’m not confused about it, it doesn’t change on some magical whim, and I’m not so obnoxious that I need to make up pronouns for myself to feel ‘special’ or victimized.”

Robinson concluded her tweet by imploring that Harvard, which ranked number one in Best Education Schools in the United States, according to US News and World Report, needs “defunding NOW.”

Aside from the follow-up tweet explaining its use of the term “birthing people,” Harvard has not responded to any additional media requests at the time of publishing.
