Until recently, the left had a propensity to attack and cancel any human with whom they disagreed or deemed bigoted. However, earlier this month, the left began fixating on in animate objects such as puppets and carbonated beverages. The left’s most recent victim is perhaps its most bizarre yet: Mr. Potato Head.
This month, the left determined that combating the (nonexistent) oppression adults face in America wasn’t enough; kids are oppressed, too!
In an ostensible attempt to be less misogynistic and expel sexism, the toy company, Hasbro, announced on Thursday that it would be removing the prefix “Mr.” from the Mr. Potato Head brand.
Sharing a link on Twitter, Hasbro boasted about its woke decision to give the signature product a “21st-centrury rebrand.”
The company delineated the prefixes as deleterious and “limiting” to children.
“Culture has evolved,” Kimberly Boyd, Hasbro’s senior vice president of global brands, told Fast Company in an interview. “Kids want to be able to represent their own experiences. The way the brand currently exists — with the ‘Mr.’ and ‘Mrs.’ — is limiting when it comes to both gender identity and family structure.”
Hasbro’s decision comes mere days after California Assemblyman Evan Low, a Democrat, reintroduced a bill that would preclude any retail store – with a workforce in excess of 500 people – from having sex-separated departments for children. If passed, the text of the bill necessitates that applicable retailers have a single, undivided, “gender-neutral” area for children’s toys and clothing.
In a miserable attempt to placate potential customers on the both the right and the insatiable left, Hasbro tweeted on Thursday that, while the prefixes “Mr.” and “Mrs.” will, in fact, be dropped from the brand name and corresponding logos, the two toys will still be available for purchase.
“Hold that Tot [sic] – your main spud, MR. POTATO HEAD isn’t going anywhere!” Hasbro exclaimed on Twitter. “While it was announced today that the POTATO HEAD brand name and logo are dropping the ‘MR.’ I yam [sic] proud to confirm that MR. & MRS. POTATO HEAD aren’t going anywhere and will remain MR. & MRS. POATO HEAD.”
One Twitter user rhetorically suggested that Hasbro should actually change its name in order to be less sexist and more inclusive. “Hasbro?” they tweeted. “Try Hassis to be more inclusive.”
Even the NY Post joked about the company’s superfluous decision to create a gender-neutral potato with removable extremities and highlighted the company’s rather ambiguous announcement:
“Even Mr. Potato Head finds gender conformity un-apeeling! … Some cheered the ‘woke’ change while others called it half-baked to label a vegetable ‘non-binary.’ … There was also no word on Potato Head’s preferred pronoun — or whether the studly spud will keep its signature black mustache.”New York Post | February 25, 2021
The Post reports that other toy makers and brands have taken similar steps recently in order to promulgate the idea that it’s perfectly normal for one’s biological sex to vary from their subjective gender identity.
The beloved Barbie, Thomas the Train, and American Girl are just a few examples.
