The Office of the Governor of California has released new guidelines on mask-wearing, requesting that diners at restaurants keep their mask on in between bites.

“Going out with members of your household this weekend? Don’t forget to keep your mask on in between bites,” the announcement posted to Twitter read.

The graphic shows a cartoon woman surveying a menu with her mask on, taking a bite with the mask off, and then placing the mask back on.

Curiously, the graphic also reads, “Minimize the number of times you take your mask off.”

Masks have become a focus of contention in recent months as health experts try to guide the public on the best way to stay healthy in the midst of COVID-19.

California’s new guidelines seem to contradict the recommendations of health experts. The CDC recommends that people wash their hands before putting on their mask and that they “be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, and mouth when removing and wash your hands immediately after removing.”

The public has been quick to point to these contradictions between California recommendations and the CDC:

CDC guidance… touch the mask as little as possible and wash hands as soon as you remove it… so each bite of food, you have to get up and wash hands, but that means putting the mask back on to go wash hands… let’s stick with not touching our masks while food is at the table! pic.twitter.com/AKQglJwKVF

The new guidelines also contradict the World Health Organization’s recommendations to wash hands before touching your mask, before removing your mask, and to avoid touching the mask while wearing it.

One response on Twitter even came from someone who voted for Governor Newsom and supports Joe Biden:

This embarrasses me, a Californian who voted for Newsom. Mask-wearing/social distancing are vital, but this is ridiculous. Touching your mask that frequently is worse. Patio dining, masked servers, masked patrons except when eating/drinking. Take this down & alter the directive.

Other responses have been far more strongly worded:

Hi, CA resident here. I have no problem wearing a mask. I’ll do it in the grocery store. Hell I’ll gladly wear it at the gym. But if I’m at a table with my family and appropriately distanced from others THERE’S NO CHANCE IN HELL I’M WEARING A MASK BETWEEN BITES. YOU’RE INSANE!
