Olympic athlete and transgender female, Chelsea Wolfe, qualified as an alternate to represent the United States at this year’s Summer Olympics and said that the goal was to win and then burn an American flag on the podium in a Facebook post made last year.
BMX freestyle rider wrote in a Facebook post unearthed by Fox News: “My goal is to win the Olympics so I can burn a US flag on the podium.”
Wolfe quickly tried to reframe this comment in a statement and suggested anyone who interpreted her comment as hatred for the United States was “sorely mistaken.”
“One of the reasons why I work so hard to represent the United States in international competition is to show the world that this country has morals and values, that it’s not all of the bad things that we’re known for,” Wolfe claimed. “I take a stand against fascism because I care about this country and I’m not going to let it fall into the hands of fascists after so many people have fought and sacrificed to prevent fascism from taking hold abroad. As a citizen who wants to be proud of my home country, I’m sure as hell not going to let it take hold here.”
To many Americans, this may come as a very strange way to support the country that made it possible for you to represent it in the Olympic games. Patriotism apparently comes in many forms, and increasingly in the form of disrespecting the flag or in this case, outright destroying it. Forget the idea a biological man is being allowed to compete against biological women as the focus of this piece, and instead think of the antithetical nature of wanting to place in your chosen discipline for the purpose of burning the flag of the country which you were chosen to represent.
As is the case in sports more and more in recent years, it has become in vogue to disrespect, kneel and now burn the flag when you have the spotlight and platform to do so. For those who she says “fought and sacrificed” for this country and in the name of this flag, her statement would come as little comfort to them or their families. If this is meant to be a form of protest, then there will inevitably be those who rush to this athlete’s defense and suggest it is her right to protest in a way he sees fit.
Regardless of first amendment rights or the legality of actually doing this on the podium, why is it the US Olympic team is standing by and allowing this type of rhetoric and action to distract from its athletes competing at the games? If an employee were to in some way to desecrate the logo or some representation of the company they work for, would they not be reprimanded or even fired? So why is it then that Wolfe gets to suggest she will destroy the flag she is going to the games to represent will no recourse from the US Olympic committee?
Seems to be another American institution that has caved to the “woke left,” and now “oppressed” groups get to do as they please in the name of America’s rotten treatment of those individuals in these groups. In this case, it is in reaction to the opposition and outright banning of biological males competing against biological females in sports from the Trump administration to red states like Tennessee, South Dakota and Florida.
Nonetheless, the idea that this action is anyway “patriotic” is just the opposite, it is a slap in the face to anyone who has taken up the flag or put on the uniform and as Wolfe puts it, “fought and sacrificed,” especially when you are participating on the world stage representing the country that bestowed that flag upon you. Athletes that are tapped to represent the United States of America should do just that, represent it, not resent it.
This country, unlike many others around the world, protects your right to speak out and protest against it, but as far as the US Olympic team allowing one of their athletes to say something like this with no repercussions is just wrong.
I can’t think of any other time in which an Olympic athlete vowed to destroy the American flag if they were to win in their chosen discipline, much less be allowed to make such disturbing claims by the US Olympic committee. It should be a no-brainer that this particular athlete should not be allowed to compete under the American banner after expressing such contempt for it or at the very least should be sidelined from participating in any actual competition while at this summer’s games.
The Olympics, more than any other competition, is meant for the best athletes in the world to come together to represent and compete for their country, it is an endeavor one takes on with pride that they get to represent their flag. For Wolfe, it appears this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, an opportunity other athletes in her sport were denied is strictly about personal gain and self-promotion. One should be going to display the athletic prowess of their home nation and promote themselves second.
Unfortunately, it seems gone are the days were people turned to sports as a way to distract from the world of politics and political activism. As the American people have spoken out against this type of activism in sports before, they will undoubtedly do again. More and more the American people are starting to see this type of behavior for what it truly is, hatred for the United States of America, and they respond for their undying support for this country and all those individuals and athletes who love and love to represent it.
