House Republicans are looking to oust Democratic Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar from her assigned committee assignments, amid a similar fight as Democrats also work to oust Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from her committee assignments.
Earlier this week, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer gave House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) a choice: remove Greene from her committee assignments within 72 hours or Democrats will bring this issue to the House floor.
Greene was appointed to the House Education and Labor Committee and the House Budget Committee. Afterwards Democrats sparked outrage over a recently unearthed video from 2019 showed the Georgia Republican suggesting that the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and Sandy Hook shootings were “staged.” And that the survivor of the Parkland shooting was paid by George Soros.
Greene, a freshman congresswoman, has a controversial reputation since she was elected to the House, she has a well established belief in the QAnon movement.
McCarthy met with Greene on Tuesday night and told her that she would either have to apologize for her comments or be removed from at least one of her committee assignments.
Meanwhile, according to Fox News, as Democrats look to set a motion on the House floor to oust Greene from her committee assignments, a proposed GOP-backed amendment that calls for Omar to be ousted from her assignments “in light of conduct she has exhibited.”
The amendment is sponsored by Representatives Brian Babin (R-TX), Jeff Buncan (R-SC), Jody Hice (R-GA), Andy Biggs (R-AZ), and Ronny Jackson (R-TX). On the grounds of Omar’s history of making anti-Semitic comments.
In February 2019, she drew criticism from colleagues on both sides when she tweeted “It’s all about the Benjamins baby,” in response to a tweet about McCarthy’s promise to take “action” against her over criticism of Israel. Later she made the suggestion that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee was paying politicians to take a positive stance on Israel.
Last week, Greene came under fire as the left wing outlet Media Matters unearthed a Facebook video from 2018, which Greene made unfound claims about the cause of the California wildfires. She alleged that the Rothschilds, a wealthy Jewish banking family that is frequently the subject of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, may have used a laser beam from space to spark a forest fire in order to profit from it.
Numerous House Democrats have expressed their support of both a formal censure against Greene and for her expulsion from the House of Representatives, while they still don’t wanna hold people like Ilhan Omar accountable for the things she has said in the past. Along with the fact that the Chinese compromised Eric Swalwell, and he still keeps his job with the House intelligence committee.
