Top officials are offering a word of warning regarding the future of the Southern border. They’re saying a combination of Democrat Joe Biden’s immigration policies along with numerous factors in Latin America are already causing a surge in foreign residents at the U.S. border.
Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan, a Trump appointee, suggested that Biden’s immigration policies are a primary element that is driving people to the border right now.
“Cartels and human smugglers are fueling perceptions that our borders will once again be wide open,” Morgan said. “And that we will be reinstating the loopholes that have been closed.”
Last month, about 70,000 people were apprehended when trying to illegally cross the border. This number is approximately a 64% jump from last November that comes in spite COVID-19.
“If your policy consists of stopping deportation for almost four months, discontinuing or not supporting Title 42, revoking the Migrant Protection Protocols,” Morgan said, “The message you’re sending is clear and simple: We have open borders.”
There are other factors in Latin America which are contributing to this border rush including hurricanes and weakened economic systems (partly due to COVID-19).
Biden has pledged to grant amnesty to 11 million illegal immigrants that currently live inside the country. Biden has also stated that he plans on halting construction of the border wall. More specifically, he told NPR back in August that “not another foot of wall would be constructed under my administration.” Biden’s stance on this issue would prove rather costly and comes despite evidence that border walls are effective.
Morgan reiterated on Twitter his stance on halting border wall construction two days ago. Morgan says that it would be “disastrous.”
