A grand total of $43,970.54 was charged to a credit card belonging to the Republican National Committee (RNC), said treasurer Ronald Kaufman.
Of this amount, $35,520.24 was made to EZ COFFEE AND TEA, which is an eCommerce site that sells coffee, tea, and chocolate. Another purchase for $8,450 was spent on a vendor named “MIDWEST BIOCHAR”, an agricultural services company based out of Kansas.
Kaufman reported that American Express refunded all of the fraudulent charges. The transactions were made in September 2020 and were labeled as “office supplies”, and the theft was being investigated in October, spokeswoman Emma Vaughn told Business insider.
“Upon resolution of the dispute, AMEX credited the account and we applied the credit against the original account per standard accounting practices,” Vaughn also reported.
