Donald Trump has reportedly spoken to various confidants about the possibility of forming his own political party. The so-called Patriot Party would has sparked the interests of independent voters and those who feel betrayed by the GOP.
Trump discussed the matter with several aides and other people close to him last week,” according to The Wall Street Journal. “The president said he would want to call the new party the ‘Patriot Party,’ the people said.”
After the events at the Capitol on January 6, many Republicans have distanced themselves from Trump. Mitch McConnell, for instance, claimed on the Senate floor that Trump stoked the flames that led to the riot. Furthermore, ten Republicans voted to impeach Trump a second time.
However, many Republicans fear that the creation of the ‘Patriot Party’ would only split the GOP and further push back the conservative movement.
While Trump stated in his farewell address that his movement is only “just beginning” and that he “will be back in some form,” it is unclear if Trump’s new party idea is serious
Serious or not, many young conservatives who feel that they no longer have a place in the GOP are enthused with the idea of a ‘Patriot Party.’ The party, whose symbol is a lion, was gaining traction on social media even before Trump’s farewell speech. Their “official” Instagram page was taken down with almost 100,000 followers. The party’s Facebook page has amassed 17,000 followers so far.
With big-tech censorship afoot, we are unsure at this time whether the movement will pick up, or if Trump will be able to gain traction with a new party.
