According to the The Daily Wire, the Vatican and a prominent Chicago Cardinal are at odds over a recent statement released by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) which warned that despite Biden positioning himself as a devout Catholic, the President’s agenda would advance “moral evils” because of his “uncompromising positions on abortion, gender, and religious liberty “.
President of the USCCB, Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez, issued the statement Wednesday, ahead of the Biden inauguration, noting that “working with President Biden will be unique… as he is our first president in 60 years to profess the Catholic faith.”
“Mr. Biden’s piety and personal story, his moving witness to how his faith has brought him solace in times of darkness and tragedy, his longstanding commitment to the Gospel’s priority for the poor – all of this I find hopeful and inspiring,” Archbishop Gomez wrote, adding that Biden knows “in a deep and personal way” the value of religious institutions.
But later in the statement, Archbishop Gomez stated some uncomfortable truths that we are soon to be facing.
“As pastors, the nation’s bishops are given the duty of proclaiming the Gospel in all its truth and power, in season and out of season, even when that teaching is inconvenient or when the Gospel’s truths run contrary to the directions of the wider society and culture,” Archbishop Gomez went on “So, I must point out that our new President has pledged to pursue certain policies that would advance moral evils and threaten human life and dignity, most seriously in the areas of abortion, contraception, marriage, and gender. Of deep concern is the liberty of the Church and the freedom of believers to live according to their consciences.”
The statement made some within the Catholic church’s hierarchy very unhappy and cause an intervention with the Vatican’s Secretariat of State according to Pillar Catholic.
Chicago Cardinal Blaise Cupich took the opportunity to take some shots at his fellow Catholic bishops in defense of Joe Biden.
“Today, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued an ill-considered statement on the day of President Biden’s inauguration. Aside from the fact that there is seemingly no precedent for doing do, the statement, critical of President Biden came as a surprise to many bishops, who received it just hours before it was released,” he went on “The statement was crafted without the involvement of the Administrative Committee, a collegial consultation that is normal course for statements that represent and enjoy the considered endorsement of the American bishops. The internal institutional failures involved must be addressed, and I look forward to contributing to all efforts to that end, so that, inspired by the Gospel, we can build up the unity of the Church, and together take up the work of healing our nation in this moment of crisis.”
Late Wednesday, Biden’s press secretary, Jen Psaki, dodged a question asked by a reporter from EWTN about Biden’s abortion policy only to reply that he “attends church regularly”.
Catholic bishops were already at odds with each other with some saying that they will deny Joe Biden from receiving communion, and some most notably Washington D.C.’s archbishop Cardinal Wilton Daniel Gregory saying that they will not deny him communion over his views on abortion.
Joe Biden is the nations second Catholic president in American history, the first being John F. Kennedy.
